A balance hanger is an attachment to the bassoon that allows connecting a neck strap at a position closer to the natural balance point of the bassoon.  It allows the bassoon to be held with less weight encumbering the left hand. 

The use of a balance hanger is recommended to anyone who regularly plays the bassoon with a neck strap, or anyone who normally uses a seat strap but finds that they must occaisionaly perform while standing. 

An initial installation of a bushing is required.  The hanger attaches to the nect strap ring of the boot with a pin inserted into a hole in the top of the boot joint.  Lining that hole with a bushing is essential to avoid excessive wear around that hole.  Bushings are suppled with the balance hanger, and extra bushings are available for using the hanger on other bassoons.
