Wood crutches are nice, because they can be made in many forms.  That also creates a problem because of the many forms in which we can offer them.  It gets confusing.  Let's break it down into the various components. 

Shapes

The shape of the crutch itself is the first thing you notice when you see one.  We make three standard shapes.  Click on this link for an image that shows the three shapes superimposed for comparison:  Composite Crutches. 

The type 1 shape is the familiar basic shape.  This is the standard shape supplied with our professional bassoon models.  The type 2 shape provides a deeper contour for more control.  It is particularly comfortable for use with contrabassoons, especially with a screw stem.  The type 3 shape looks radical, but is surprisingly comfortable in the way it fits the the hand.  The type 4 designation is reserved for customer defined custom shapes.

Stems

After the style of the crutch iteslf, the next thing you need to check is the stem size and the corresponding bracket in which the stem must fit.  We make three different stems.  The "A" stem is the same 3/16 inch (4.8mm) stem that is used on our plastic crutches.  The "B" stem is 5/32 inch (4mm) and is consistent with most European crutch stems.  The crutches on our professional bassoon models use the B stem.  The "C" stem is the least known but provides the greatest control.  This stem is threaded (#10-24 thread), and is provided with a lock nut. The crutch is screwed into the bracket to whatever depth and position is desired and the lock nut secures it in that position. 

Custom Crutches

Because our wood crutches are hand made it is possible to have custom made crutches.  Ordering custom made items is not practical through a web site.  Please contact the factory directly for such items. 

To make a custom crutch we must have a sketch from you showing the outline of the crutch, including an indication of where the stem is installed.  It is important that the sketch must show the outline of the crutch at the actual size you want. 

Custom Stem Lengths:

The nominal length of our stems is 1 inch in length.  Persons desiring a longer stem can order a custom stem length.  This is possible only for wood crutches and is not available for plastic crutches.  You're welcome to specify any length.  If you don't specify a length we will make it 1 1/2 inches long.  It is better to ask for too long as you can always cut off the excess length.
