Body Options

Bass Joints

Two Piece Bass Joint, with special case
Description: By shortening the bass joint to the same length as the wing joint and adding that missing length to the bell joint, it becomes possible to put the instrument into a shorter case. This can simplify everyday handling of the instrument and is particularly useful for travel. The normal bassoon case can be slightly too long for carry-on luggage on airplanes. The shorter case of the instrument with a two piece bass joint satisfies the standards for carry-on luggage. A special case is supplied as part of this option.

Tenons
The use of cork or string on tenons is a matter of some debate in the bassoon world. It is generally accepted that string wrapped tenons provide greater protection for the instrument. However, some feel that cork is easier to use. As a matter of policy, all Fox bassoons are provided with string wrapped tenons, however, we would be happy to use cork on any tenon when requested.

Keys

Whisper Keys & Whisper Key Locks
A number of mechanisms can be used to control the whisper key. Some of them lock the whisper key in a closed position. Others provide an alternative touch, in addition to the normal touch for the left thumb, with which to close the whisper key. It is recommended that only one whisper key lock be on an instrument. Having both a right and left hand lock can be confusing and might result in one of them being locked when it shouldn’t be. (The whisper key may also be call the “piano key” or the “crook key” and probably many other names as well.)

High E and High F Keys
High E keys always involve two keys. The E/F(sharp) trill key is a basic key normally found on all bassoons. This also may be called the high E(flat) key. The high E key connects to the E/F(sharp) trill key so that when the high E key is depressed both keys will open. Several variations of high E keys are available. In each case the tone holes involved do not move—only the keys which operate those tone holes are changed.

A(flat)/B(flat) Trill Keys
A(flat)/B(flat) trill keys are necessary to enable the player to perform a trill that is otherwise difficult or impossible to play. Two basic types of systems are available. The Thumb A(flat)/B(flat) Trill Key adds a tone hole operated by the right thumb that enables the trill to be played. The Articulated A(flat)/B(flat) Trill links two existing tone holes together to enable the trill without requiring a new touch.

Thumb A(flat)/B(flat) Trill Key
Description: This is the most familiar A(flat)/B(flat) trill key system. The touch is normally added raised above the right thumb F(sharp) and G(sharp) spatulas. Alternate spatula positions could include behind the thumb G(sharp) spatula, in place of the thumb G(sharp) spatula, or above the thumb B(flat) spatula.
Catalog Number: 11
List Price: $600.00
Available On: 601, 660, 101, 201, I, II, III, & IV

Articulated A(flat)/B(flat) Trill, with clutch
Description: The articulated A(flat)/B(flat) Trill is used by fingering the A(flat), depressing the thumb B(flat) key, and trilling the 3 rd finger G key. A link enables the B(flat) and A tone holes to operate together allowing the B(flat) to sound properly. This mechanism can also play other trills from other notes up to a B(flat). The clutch allows the link to be disengaged permitting certain other fingerings in the high range of the instrument to be played. The clutch is recommended.
Catalog Number: 12

Low C & D Spatulas for Right Thumb

Low C & D Spatulas for Right Thumb
Description: These two touches are mounted over the pancake key and operated by the right hand thumb. These are best used in combination with the Automatic Low E(flat) & D(flat) mechanism.

Low E(flat)/C(sharp) Mechanisms & Alternate Low C(sharp) Keys

Automatic Low E(flat) & D(flat) Mechanism (Cuciureanu)
Description: These “articulated” or “reverse sprung” mechanisms allow a new set of techniques. When used in combination with the low C & D Keys for the Right Hand Thumb, trills in the low end of the bassoon that are usually considered impossible become easy.
Catalog Number: 20
List Price: $750.00
Available On: 601, 660, 101, 201, I, II, & III

Single Spatula Low E(flat)/D(flat) Mechanism (Cuciureanu)
Description: This is similar to the Automatic Low E(flat)/D(flat) described above. The biggest difference is that this has only a single spatula to play both notes. The position of the low C key determines which note will be played when the spatula is depressed. This system does not allow independent use of the low C(sharp) key. This key is at its best when a little finger whisper key is also part of the instrument. Access to the little finger whisper key will never get better!
Catalog Number: 25
List Price: $750.00
Available On: 601, 660, 101, 201, I, II, & III

Alternate Low C(sharp) Keys

Auxiliary Low C(sharp) Mechanism
Description: The touch is added alongside the low B natural key just above the low C touch. It enables the left thumb to operate the low C(sharp) key. This can be used to play a low C(sharp)/D(sharp) trill. This mechanism provides a better action than the auxiliary spatula. Unlike the auxiliary spatula, the touch of the auxiliary mechanism is usually connected with the low C key so that the low C key is closed when the low C(sharp) is opened.
Catalog Number: 27
List Price: $415.00
Available On: 601, 660, 101, 201, I, II, III, & IV
Conflicts With: (28) Auxiliary Low C(sharp) Spatula

Auxiliary Low C(sharp) Spatula
Description: The touch is added alongside the low B natural key just above the low C touch. It enables the left thumb to operate the low C(sharp) key. This can be used to play a low C(sharp)/D(sharp) trill. The Auxiliary Low C(sharp) Spatula is simply a touch added to the middle of the long hinge for the low C(sharp) key. The action of this key is inferior to that of the Auxiliary Low C(sharp) Mechanism, although its use is identical.
Catalog Number: 28
List Price: $175.00
Available On: 601, 660, 101, 201, I, II, III, & IV
Conflicts With: (27) Auxiliary Low C(sharp) Mechanism

Rollers

All Fox and Renard bassoons include four rollers for the right little finger F/G(sharp) keys and the left little finger E(flat)/C(sharp) keys. Many additional rollers are available for Fox models. Renard models 220 and 240 include rollers for the right thumb B(flat) and F(sharp) keys with the crown on the pancake key between them. Additional rollers are not available for Renard models.

Rollers are often added to keys to aid in moving between adjacent keys. Most added rollers are for keys operated by the player’s thumbs. The addition of rollers should be done with care as they can, in certain circumstances, be counterproductive. Any key that includes a roller by necessity must be made larger than the same key without a roller. Likewise, the shape of the key must be changed to include the roller, creating a different feel for the player. The combination of a larger key with a different shape can actually inhibit the player instead of aiding them. Finally, if not properly maintained, a roller can be the source of unwanted key noise. In each case, the decision to add a roller or rollers should be taken with the same care that would be used in selecting any option on the instrument.

Right Thumb Rollers
All of the four keys for the right thumb can have rollers added singly or in pairs between them. Paired rollers can add distance between keys; single rollers in certain positions can be impediments to movement.

Thumb B(flat) Roller
Description: A roller for the thumb B(flat) should be paired with either a roller or a crown on the pancake key. The position of the thumb makes movement from a plain pancake key to a roller B(flat) difficult.
Catalog Number: 69
List Price: $150.00
Available On: 601, 660, 201, II, III, & IV
Standard Included On: 101, I, 240 & 220

Crown on Pancake Key
Description: The crown on the pancake key elevates the top surface of the key to work with adjacent B(flat) and F(sharp) rollers.
